I'm quite enjoying the new digs in Coal Harbour. The location is great for getting places, and I'll be able to watch the Santa Claus parade tomorrow from my balcony. But I miss the sense of community. The last 2 places I've lived were both fantastic in terms of having a sense of community. The new place feels almost... sterile. Like I'm staying in an extended-stay hotel suite. The people that you come across on the street are all very distant and impersonal. It's almost like there's no life in them, and they just carry on with whatever they were doing when they come across other people. Ignoring them, pretending they don't exist, and continuing whatever journey they were on.
When I was in Mt. Pleasant it was the opposite - people interacted with you, and you'd walk down the street to see people living as opposed to seeing people going somewhere. Same for the loft, even though it was on the Downtown East Side... the people there and in neighbouring Gastown weren't usually in the middle of going somewhere. They'd already arrived.
