Winter Blahs

22 November 2005 - 23:31.

The nights are growing longer, and we find ourselves going both to work and home in the darkness. During the few daylight hours we have, the sky is grey and monochrome. Moods fall, tempers flare, and the press of impending holidays, and the concomitant demands (sometimes unwanted) loom above us.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that endorphins are a good cure for the winter blues. Endorphins are a naturally produced opiate, and are closely linked with feelings of euphoria, such as the much-hyped 'runner's high'. Endorphins have also been clinically shown to cause a widening of the blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow and overall circulation.

Endorphins are relased by the body through various impetii, including (but not limited to)
- Spicy food
- Sex
- Pain
- Ultra Violet light

So go lay in a tanning bed and eat some habanero peppers, while someone giving you oral sex pinches your nipples. You'll feel better apparently.

Mysterious Visitors

18 November 2005 - 21:38.

So last night, while I was visiting my grandmother at her care home, I was told that there are actually people who read this page with something approaching regularity! This was a revelation to me, believe it or not. I mean, I know Amy checks out the page fairly often, but other people too?!? I was stunned.

A quick check of my log files showed that I actually seem to be getting a few people a day visiting this site, and this page in particular. Now of course this is a speck of mist in the bucket... One of our websites at work is currently logging about 2000 hits a day, so 3 a day is pretty piss-ant. But consider... I don't really link here from anywhere, and it's been a while since I've posted on anyone else's site with a link.

So tell me... who are you, and where did you come from? I'd appreciate if you could drop me a note at the email address on the home page, just to let me know who you are. No long discussive commitment... I'm just curious to know who you are.

All 3 of you.

Checking In

08 November 2005 - 16:41.

See... I told you that I wouldn't guarantee any sort of consistency in writing here. That'll teach you to expect things of me. So nyah...

I was at an IT Security conference today. What a load of crap. As far as computer security conferences go, this one was pretty weak. In fairness, some folks would have gained valuable information out of this thing, but I'm not one of them. Not that I'm some sort of security superstar or anything (I'm not), but the whole thing was about philosophizing security. And the reality of the matter is that computing security is anything *but* theoretical. Either you do it right to begin with, or you start cleaning viruses and spyware.

Speaking of work, I've been doing too much of it lately, and I can feel the toll starting to force itself on my consciousness. I need more down time, more Jeremy time, lots more Amy time, and less work time. So towards that end, I've taken tomorrow off, which gives me a 4-day weekend. I've handed in my work cell phone. And I've turned on my Out of Office. I'm disconnecting from the networked world. I'll avoid email as much as possible.

I don't want to be a part of the Borg collective. I want to be human again.
