Randomness

28 July 2007 - 14:01.

You know you're jaded when you can see fireworks like those from Spain (this last Wednesday at the Celebration of Light) and sit there being critical. I wasn't overly impressed with the bulk of it; much repetition, questionable music choices, and little innovation. In fairness however the finale was great, and one of the best I've seen in a long time.

Work is reasonably busy, but is showing signs of slowing down. The lovely and talented Tanya came up with a good suggestion for me to find more work, which I'll be following up on next week, but if you know of someone who needs some good tech support services then have them give my company a call.

Tonight is the Summer Lantern Festival, also known as Illuminares. I'm happy that they're back to doing it on the same day as the fireworks. A short while back they changed the schedule so as not to conflict with the fireworks, and it was an utter zoo. Being on the same night makes the crowds significantly smaller, and the event much more pleasant. I highly recommend it as a good photo op.

That's about it. Happy Saturday everyone!

Rat-i-fication

26 July 2007 - 09:24.

Yesterday, the members of the Tsawwassen (pronounced Suh-WAH-sen) First Nation voted to ratify their negotiated treaty. I won't go into an analysis of the treaty itself, since there are others more well informed thn I about the details. The result was about 69% in favour of approval.

I mention it here only becuse my very dear friend Andrew, who visits here often, poured his heart and soul into the process for the past several years. He worked long and hard to try to improve the lot of his People, and to lay a foundation for progress for the Band's members.

Congratulations Andrew. You worked hard, and you've earned the accolades you're receiving.

On Pain

23 July 2007 - 10:32.

For the past few weeks I've been kinda quiet here, except for one day about a week and a half back when I was especially whacked out on pain killers, and I found almost anything to be stupidly funny.

For those not in the know, the short version is that when I was in Portland at a rowing regatta towards the end of June, I wrenched my back in a particularly bad way. As a result my entire pelvis got rotated on 2 axes (right side forward and high) and I couldn't walk straight. Most muscles in my low back, hip and sacral areas were in spasm for about 3 weeks. If you saw me walking, you know that I looked like a puppet without a string.

I've had a dislike of pain medication for a long time, and so through much of the first couple weeks I refused to take any aspirin or ibuprofen. I allowed myself some muscle relaxants before bed, but nothing else. I see now that this was a mistake, since it let me more that slightly bearish. But wait! There's more!

Something is Wrong

22 July 2007 - 19:55.

I'm leaving Stanley Park this evening, and as I drive around the north side of the park I see that Burrard Inlet is covered in fog.

I go to Keefer and Columbia Streets in Chinatown, so I can get dinner from the night market (there's a booth there with great rice rolls) and the street is empty - there's no market.

Today is the third day of rain in a row. It's under 20 degrees.

It's October, right?

Obviously...

13 July 2007 - 20:38.

... I need to change my meds. I'm finding humour in far too many things tonight.

So you bought yourself a new iPhone? And you're having trouble with the sign-up process on AT&T? Here's an idea (after the jump)...... But wait! There's more!

Gawd help me

I don't know why, but for some stupid reason this video amused the hell out of me

Triskaidekaphobia

13 July 2007 - 15:04.

I've never really been one to get nervous or edgy on Friday the 13th. I'm not even really a fan of the movies.

How about you? Do you get nervous? Is Friday the 13th usually a good day for you or a bad one?

Just.... No

10 July 2007 - 13:24.

I don't care how hot it is. I don't care how many people are around. I don't care if you feel it is your right, and I have little interest in you showing off your (obviously bottle-bred) sun tan.

If you're as old as my grandmother, you should NOT be walking around in flip flops, short shorts, and a bikini top that would be better suited on a Playboy bunny. You should most certainly not be traipsing through a grocery store looking like that. When people look at you, it's because they see a train wreck, not because there's any sort of appeal.

Someone drop an anvil on me so I can distract myself from the image that's burned itself onto my retinas. Nightmares tonight, I bet.

Grrr

02 July 2007 - 19:41.

I really can't begin to describe how frustrating it is to have had to spend almost an entire long weekend on my back. It's just fucking wrong.
