How To Get Discount Furnitre
30 September 2008 - 09:18.
A number of months back I asked the 5 of you for
opinions on a red couch. I ended up NOT getting that colour because it turned out to be a custom order, and I didn't feel like living without a sofa for 4 months. So I went with a mocha colour.
When I placed the order for that (and an armchair) I put down a 50% deposit and was told that I would be contacted before delivery to arrange for final payment of the balance, about a month hence. So 2 weeks go by, and I get a call from the warehouse; my couch is in. Being the shyster that I am (apparently), I didn't mention that I was still supposed to be paying a balance. So they delivered my new couch.
It sort of bugged me a little bit through the summer that I may have received the couch under less-than-perfectly-honest circumstances. So last week I went to the shop to make payment. Only to find that the store had closed. In fact, the entire chain of stores apparently went out of business in early September. With sloppy accounting and receivables management, I don't really wonder why, or how it happened.
But at least I have my couch. And I'm glad I didn't place the order for the red one.
Google's Calculator

Did you know that Google can't do math?
There's a feature in Google search that lets you input mathematical formulae. Kinda neat actually. However it's cropping up that there are limitations. If you input 399999999999999-399999999999998 the result comes back as zero. But if you remove one of those 9's from each side, it works.
Maybe they're fallible after all.

There's a hockey game on. I feel better already, even though it's only pre-season...
Update: Canucks won 4-3, playing a bunch of second stringers, against the Oilers and half their opening night lineup. And one thing I'll say is that the Canuck's style of play *was more entertaining than it was last year. It wasn't the Marc Crawford run-and-gun style, but it wasn't a pure trap either; more a kind of weak-side lock. But certainly more entertaining, in any event. The optimist in me says "Maybe this season won't be a write off after all..."
Anyone Else Ready?

It's been a loooooong 4-5 months.
I'm ready for hockey season to begin again. Anyone else?
Shoot Me

Some shoot me. Shoot me now. Please.
There is a new movie coming out about... chihuahuas. From Beverly Hills.
They can't be fucking serious!! Do they actually expect to make money from this tripe?! The abhorrence can be seen
here.

Isn't it great when someone else is doing doing computer work, and then screw it up? And the company that is having the work done then asks you o fix the problems caused by the first person?
How about... no. If you want me to manage and maintain your computer, I'll happily do that. But don't ask me to clean up the garbage created by someone else's incompetence.

Mental note # 31...
When sitting in line at the Langdale ferry terminal, you can have pizza delivered.
I was there last night waiting for a boat, someone came over to the lineup and started yelling about selling a pizza. Turns out the delivery driver couldn't find the person who'd ordered it, and so was selling a medium Hawaiian pie for $10. One of the other motorbike riders bought it, then shared it with the rest of us on 2 wheels.
Over the next 45 minutes as I continued to wait for the boat (don't get me started...), I saw no less than 5 more pizzas being carried into the lanes. Evidently this is a common practise.
I'd Forgotten These...

These are so old, they're beyond internet-retro. They're almost new again....
You know those motivational posters you get in office spaces? The ones like 'teamwork' and 'courage' and 'perseverence'?
How about posters in the same style based on the seven deadly sins? My grandfather has the Sloth one as his desktop wallpaper, so I curious to see if the originating site still had all seven of them posted.
They do. And they're
here.
Figures...

It figures that within hours o my last post, the media report that the TV execs and teh other parties have recanted on their position regarding the leader's debate...
Sigh.
What's Your View?
10 September 2008 - 11:41.
It's been all over the national news, so I won't go into the specifics/ details... but I'm sure by now you've heard that the Green Party is being excluded from the pre-election leader's debate. And argument has been raised that the Greens did not have an elected member of parliament (their sole MP crossed the floor, he did not get elected as a member of Green). On the other side, in the last general election, they received over 800K votes, not an insignificant number.
What do you think? Should the Greens be allowed to participate? And why?
Living On The Edge
02 September 2008 - 13:42.
I'm not usually one to get/acquire software on release day - the bleeding edge of technology hasn't always been my bag, especially as a network administrator.
Google's new
Chrome browser intrigues me though. Forget the business ramifications of Google taking on Microsoft's most popular product, Internet Explorer (as opposed to it's most widely used, which is Windows). Fact is, I'm not thrilled with Firefox 3, I seriously dislike IE 7 AND IE 8, and I find Opera just doesn't render properly all the pages I need/use.
I'll be downloading this one once I get home.
