Ms Carolina

You might have heard about this one on the news... if not, take a look at the video (after the jump).
There are many arguments about whether or not there's legitimacy to beauty pageants... And for those that say that beauty pageants are a good thing, please watch this video. Then tell me how a bubble-headed bimbo like this can place third. Yes, you heard right, she placed third at the Miss Teen USA beauty pageant...
But wait! There's more!

More On Moving

So can anyone suggest a decent moving company? Or just as important, can you suggest whom I should stay away from?
I'm finding that moving companies in this town are horrible at returning phone calls...
Moving
19 August 2007 - 14:33.
Yep, that's right... I'm moving towards the end of September. It's a beautiful place in Coal Harbour, 2 bedroom, 2 full bathrooms, gas fireplace and stove, views of water and mountains.
I'd like to state officially and for the record that I will NOT be enlisting anyone to help me move. I'm a big boy now, and I can pay for movers all by my lonesome. However there will be a house warming party towards the end of October. Most of you know how long it's been since I had a party. You'll also remember that at the last one, we were lucky the police didn't show up. And that the hot tub was never the same....

Storyeum
16 August 2007 - 09:12.
If you live in Vancouver, you probably know what Storyeum is. And you may have also heard that it went bankrupt, and that the assets are being auctioned off today. The auction preview was yesterday and I decided to take a walk through the place, since I'd never been in to see the show.
I was actually amazed at the size of the place. It's entirely underground, and it really must fill nearly an entire city block. From a strictly aesthetic perspective, it's phenomenal the level of detail that was put into the scenery down there. They'd replicated a town street, much of a sailing ship, a mountain grotto, and a train station to name a few.
But walking through in the light of ceiling fluorescents, dead and lifeless, it almost felt like we were grave robbers. I could sense the remnants of emotions that people would have felt as they came out from the guest elevator and started down the tunnels. It was kind of eerie actually. Few doors were closed, and we could get into the workshops and behind the flats to the cast areas. I remember seeing the back of one panel where someone had ticked off the performances with a pen, the way a jailed inmate would etch the days of their incarceration into a wall.
Today the whole thing will be emptied, bits of it carried off to the highest bidder. It seems a rather ignominious ending to what must at one point been a very lively place.
Happy Happy

62 years ago today, my grandparents got married. They've now officially been married longer than anyone else I know.
How do you manage 62 years together? I've asked them, and neither is able to give me a clear "must do" to make it last. In their view it's more about the commitment and the intent going into the relationship. Maybe that's part of what's wrong with marriages and relationships today, and why the divorce rate is so high.
Maybe the secret really *is as simple as having the right mindset...
Strike!

No, I'm not talking about the Vancouver labour unions...
It seems that down in the States, some group is trying to unionize bloggers. Although
the American Press article doesn't really name any group as being the organizers of this movement, it does quote a United Auto Workers local president as saying that "bloggers are on our radar".
Oh Lord, make the inanity stop.
Someone in the article points out rightly that the blogosphere is more anarchistic. It came out of a desire to be heard above the din of mainstream media, and to a great degree it still does that. However the medium has been bastardized (in my view) by interests who, as always, see a trend and try to convert it to their own ends. The result? It's now almost as much of a mainstream media tool as the paper or the TV.
So now some of them are apparently going to unionize. In an effort to get better benefits and more professionalism, there's a movement to try to organize a bunch of these folks down in the US. With that in mind, I think I'll start a movement to unionize the bloggers of Vancouver.
I say we assemble to help ensure that our rights are not violated. And if we don't get the respect, the health benefits and the press credentials that we all deserve (and I do mean all, because most of my readers are bloggers themselves) then I say we go on strike. Let's show the other side just what we mean to the city, and how much of a difference we make in the social and political makeup of the local market (once we figure out who the other side is of course, and who exactly we should be bargaining with).
I'll put myself up for president of the Bloggers Local Organization Western Media Extension. My first motion is to find a union hall, and I'll open the floor to suggestions on rooms that have the capacity to host us. Next I think we should all get press passes... so I'll contact the Canucks administration office and have then change the size of their press boxes so we can all fit.
After that I think we should open the floor to the membership. So tell me people, what should we be negotiating for?
