Slip Slidin'

27 November 2007 - 10:42.

It snowed a fair amount yesterday, which thrills me to no end.

I've resolved that I'll get back to skiing at least twice this year. I haven't skied since I was about 24, which is a distressingly long time ago. I know that when I go skiing, I will pay dearly for it the next day.

But since I started skiing when I was 4, I figure that I have a pretty good shot at remembering much of what it's all about, so at least I won't embarrass myself on the slopes. Not too badly at least.

Community

24 November 2007 - 07:59.

I'm quite enjoying the new digs in Coal Harbour. The location is great for getting places, and I'll be able to watch the Santa Claus parade tomorrow from my balcony. But I miss the sense of community.

The last 2 places I've lived were both fantastic in terms of having a sense of community. The new place feels almost... sterile. Like I'm staying in an extended-stay hotel suite. The people that you come across on the street are all very distant and impersonal. It's almost like there's no life in them, and they just carry on with whatever they were doing when they come across other people. Ignoring them, pretending they don't exist, and continuing whatever journey they were on.

When I was in Mt. Pleasant it was the opposite - people interacted with you, and you'd walk down the street to see people living as opposed to seeing people going somewhere. Same for the loft, even though it was on the Downtown East Side... the people there and in neighbouring Gastown weren't usually in the middle of going somewhere. They'd already arrived.

Funny Commercial

17 November 2007 - 19:36.

Yeah, okay, so I'm home on a Saturday night. Ya gonna make something of it? I have a lot of work to catch up on.

But during one of my breaks, I found this video (after the jump). Maybe it's only funny to true football (soccer) fans, but I killed myself on this one (after the jump But wait! There's more!

Landing

15 November 2007 - 09:47.

So yeah, I was on a cruise down the west coast of Mexico for a week. I've been on a short repositioning cruise before, but this was my first 'real' cruise. It was pretty good, and I'd take another cruise, perhaps being a bit more selective about a few things. Like having all the porst of call at once, three days in a row. I would rather have my explorations punctuated by a day off in between.

The interesting side effect to the whole cruise though is the post-cruise dizziness. It seems to come at random, and all of a sudden I feel drunk as a skunk. Kinda neat though, because I don't have to worry about hangovers - I just get the dizzies. Sometimes when I'm sitting, sometimes when I'm walking. It doesn't happen when there's lateral motion (driving, or on the plane ride back from California).

Anyone have any idea how long I'll get to enjoy this particular sensation?

Heard on a Ship

(Heard at the purser's desk, less than 12 hours before disembarkation)

"This part here about if I'm a resident or visitor to the US... what does that mean?"

Arriba!!

01 November 2007 - 06:37.

I mentioned I was going to Mexico, right? Actually, I'm going on a cruise which stops 3 times in Mexico. In Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas, to be precise. I leave Saturday, back late the following Sunday. I'd welcome any tips or suggestions on things to see while I'm in one of those towns.

In the meantime, here's something to keep you moderately amused during the interregnum. Admittedly it's a commercial, but it's a funny one. It's been a long while since an ad made me laugh out loud. (Video after the jump).

But wait! There's more!
