Happy Old Year....
31 December 2007 - 14:21.
Growing up in our family, on New Years Eve we would always find one another at some point before midnight to wish each other a happy Old Year. I don't know if it's a British thing or just something that was done in our family, but it was done consistently nonetheless. The idea behind it is that we wanted to say, "I hope your past year was good".
So let me then take this moment to wish you all a happy Old Year. I truly hope it's been, overall and in the grander scheme of things, a good year for you. May you look back on what has gone before, and smile with fond memories.
Get Yours!
27 December 2007 - 18:20.
While shopping the other day, I found that it pays to talk to the bag clerks at the grocery store.
It seems that Save On Foods has the best. Promo. Ever. You know those save-on-more points that no one pays attention to? The ones that you can collect at Save On Foods
or at Urban Fare? Well if you have 18,000 points, you can redeem them for a free 4GB silver iPod Nano, one of the new models. I went to pick up mine today (which I will use as prize draw reward for a trade show
my company is attending). Apparently they're available while supplies last, until January 5.
Refocus
26 December 2007 - 10:16.
Christmas is over, although the season continues. And I sincerely hope that all of you were able to share the day with someone (or several someones) and that the day provided all that you expected of it. Now, however, it's boxing day. And it's time to re-focus our energies on things that really matter.
World Junior hockey and US college football bowl games. If you need me, I'll be parking my ever-expanding ass in front of the tv for the next week or so.
This is how...

... to decommission a server. I love this absolutely to bits. Really, I do. I can't begin to count how many computers and servers I've decommissioned over the years, but it's got to be dozens, if not hundreds. And none of them have gone out with the flair and style of
this one. Computers have personalities (ask any sysadmin, who'll likely have a good story or two), so this one seems somehow a fitting end.
Well done folks, and rest in peace Betelgeuse.
On Christmas
15 December 2007 - 08:00.
Small decorations litter kitchen and living room, and the pile of presents under the tree has already begun. The lights are up and holiday music has been played in this house. And yet the Christmas season feels different again this year. Not like
last year, but not too dissimilar either.
It's not that I'm unhappy - I'm not. And it's not for want of family or friends. It's not that I lack Christmas spirit either - rather, I think what passes for Christmas spirit in my heart and soul is starting to change.
But wait! There's more!
Not So Good
07 December 2007 - 13:20.
Fridays are supposed to be good days, right? So why is it that I could kill a puppy today?
Maybe it's the fact that I didn't sleep well last night. Maybe I'm just over-tired. Maybe it's the computer problems I'm dealing with for one of my clients. And maybe it's one of the myriad other things going not quite right in my life right now.
My mood is just foul. I hope to heaven that I don't get pulled over by a cop for anything today. I'd probably end up in jail.
One Down
02 December 2007 - 15:01.
My plan was to go skiing twice this winter. I haven't really skied since my early twenties, and if you don't know how many years ago that was then I'm not going to be the one to tell you.
But yesterday my Mom (who is visiting from Montana) and I went to Mt. Baker ski area and spent the day swooshing down the slopes. For early season the conditions were phenomenal, with loose and loose packed powder everywhere, and more falling throughout the day.
And although my technique wasn't perfect, I didn't do any face plants. We stayed mostly to the easy and medium runs which were the best covered, and had a blast. It's good to see that I didn't lose much of the skill I'd gained over 20+ years on the slopes.
